Alan Long, the impressionist, received formal art education when he was a teenager from two famous Singapore pioneer artists, Mr Chen Chong Swee and Dr Chen Wen Hsi. After graduated from the Chinese High School, he took up full time courses at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts. He was art teacher Mr Lim Mu Hue’s favourite student at the academy.
As a lover of nature who appreciates beautiful country scenes, the scenic natural environment is his favourite subject for paintings and he is able to capture the entire atmosphere of the location to blend into his impressionistic creations. Alan paints both urban and country landscapes as well as seascapes either in oil or watercolour. He has smartly managed to master the art of using painting knives and is able to paint and complete the entire picture by painting knives except his signature and those little birds flying in his created impressions of scenic landscapes and seascapes are by sharp tiny brushes. Alan has established his very own characteristic impressionism with the special skill of painting by knives in oil. His watercolour paintings are pretty unique as traditional Chinese style of brush strokes were skillfully applied. Some of his art collectors have commented that Alan’s distinctive works of art can easily be identified even before looking at his signature.
